How this calculator works
Cubic yards = length × width × (depth in inches ÷ 12) × quantity ÷ 27, with the waste allowance added.
Worked example
A 20 × 10 ft area at 6 in deep with 10% extra equals about 4.07 cubic yards.
A cubic yard is a volume, not a coverage rate
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. The area covered by a yard depends on depth: the same yard covers far more square feet at one inch than at four inches. Enter all dimensions in consistent units and use finished depth for the layer being planned.
Calculate separate materials independently. Topsoil, gravel, mulch, and concrete have different density, compaction, and ordering practices even when their geometric volume is the same.
Convert to weight only with material data
A cubic-yard result should not be converted to tons using a universal factor. Bulk density varies by material, gradation, and moisture. Use a supplier’s weight or coverage information and confirm delivery increments, truck capacity, and site access.
