How this calculator works
Installed sections = (fence run − gate openings) ÷ panel width, rounded up. Spare allowance is then applied to the panel purchase quantity. Posts and rails follow the installed layout so spare panels do not create extra post locations.
Worked example
A 200 ft fence with one 4 ft gate, 8 ft panels, and 5% extra needs 25 installed sections and 27 purchased panels after the spare allowance is rounded up.
Measure the fence run before ordering
Walk the proposed line and divide it into straight segments between corners, ends, and gates. Measure each segment independently instead of relying on a property-line total. Record every gate opening, direction change, and slope break because these locations often need terminal, corner, or reinforced posts that a simple panel count cannot infer.
Panel width is the installed coverage, not always the nominal product name. Confirm the manufacturer’s actual width and the post-to-post spacing required by the system. Mark underground utilities before digging, and verify setbacks, easements, height limits, and permit rules locally.
How to use the result
Treat the panel number as a purchasing floor. The post and rail quantities describe a basic straight layout; add hardware, concrete, caps, brackets, and special posts separately. For sloped sites, determine whether the panels will rack with the grade or step down in level sections, because that choice changes post height, gaps, and cut waste.

Panels are rounded up to whole units. Gate widths are removed from the panel run; post count and rail count remain planning assumptions because corners, slopes, terminal posts, and manufacturer systems vary.

For a simple panel fence, a practical estimate is one more post than the number of panel sections, plus extra posts around gates or corners.
Should I include waste?
