Fence post spacing and panel count

Post spacing comes from the actual panel or rail system—not a universal number. Measure each run, remove gate openings, divide by the usable panel width, and round up the installed sections before adding spare material.

The calculation

For a straight 200-foot run with one 4-foot gate and nominal 8-foot panels:

200 − 4= 196 ft of panel run196 ÷ 8= 24.5, round to 25 sections25 × 1.05= 26.25, round to 27 panels25 + 1 gate + 1= 27 layout posts

The final section will need adjustment because the run is not an exact multiple of the panel width. The two spare panels are purchase allowance; they do not create extra post locations.

What controls post spacing?

Lowe’s notes that typical spacing is often between 5 and 8 feet, but the exact dimension is dictated by the prebuilt panel, horizontal rail, manufacturer instructions, and local requirements. Master Halco also notes that spacing changes with local conditions and wind exposure.

Measure spacing consistently—usually center to center—and confirm whether panels mount between posts or on the post faces. Brackets and actual post dimensions can change the layout. For proprietary vinyl, metal, or composite systems, follow the manufacturer’s exact chart.

“Basic layout posts” means one more post than installed sections for one straight run. Corners, gates, independent runs, transitions, and manufacturer systems change the count.

Handle gates and corners separately

Subtract gate openings from the panel run, then count the gate posts required by the gate system. A simple gate opening typically uses a hinge post and a latch post, but one may also serve as the end of an adjacent panel. Wide, double, or heavy gates may need larger posts, special footings, or manufacturer hardware.

Every corner ends one run and begins another. Calculate each straight run separately so leftover fractions are not incorrectly combined around corners. This also lets you place shortened sections where they are least noticeable.

Before marking post holes

  1. Confirm boundaries and permissions. Check surveys, setbacks, easements, permits, and neighborhood rules.
  2. Contact 811 before digging. Request utility marking for every digging project and follow your state center’s timing and instructions.
  3. Choose the exact fence system. Verify actual panel width, bracket allowance, post size, wind rating, and installation instructions.
  4. Lay out all runs, corners, and gates. Keep the tape level on slopes unless the manufacturer directs measurement along grade.
  5. Confirm footing depth and size. Soil, frost, fence height, wind exposure, and local code can all change the requirement.
A material estimate is not a structural or property-line decision. Tall privacy fences, high-wind sites, retaining conditions, and large gates may require engineered details or professional installation.

Are fence posts always 8 feet apart?

No. Six- and eight-foot layouts are common, but actual spacing comes from the panel, rail, brackets, fence height, wind exposure, slope, and manufacturer instructions.

Do spare panels increase the post count?

No. Spare material covers damage, cuts, and future repairs. Posts and rails should follow the installed layout rather than the number of extra panels purchased.

Should I dig all holes before installing panels?
